Mastodon is a name I haven't heard of in years until this weekend. In April 2019, Google shut down one of the best social networks in the world, Google+. They warned platform users so they could download their data and prepare for the shutdown.

Meanwhile, platform users have been looking for another social platform to switch to and trying to find the platform their friends are visiting. The discussion revolved around many different options, including Minds, MeWe, tsū, Mastodon, and many other smaller social platforms.
In 2019, there were not as many opportunities as today. In the end, the users were divided into three groups. Someone went to Mastodon, someone went to MeV, and someone went to places unknown.
It may surprise you, but Mastodon has been around since at least 2017 and possibly even earlier. The platform is built on free open source software that basically allows anyone to run an "instance". While some people really liked the platform, others found it difficult to navigate and not as easy to use as Twitter or Google+.
Fast forward to today, and Twitter is melting before my eyes; At least for some of its users. I won't go into a variety of reasons, but it's mostly down to Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter.

Many popular accounts are quitting or "taking a break" and other users are looking for alternatives like Mastodon. While Mastodon is definitely an alternative, I'm not sure it matches the ease of use and tools offered by a platform like Twitter.
That's not what I'm saying, don't leave Twitter; You do what you want and you go where you want. But there are also other alternatives. Platforms like MeWe, Snapchat, and Facebook will likely give you a more Twitter-like experience than Mastodon.
One of the issues with Mastodon is how you join the servers and how everything works. TechRadar has published a new article that explains how confusing this can be for a new user and why many of them won't last long. Mastodon doesn't seem to have changed much since my last visit. But we shouldn't be surprised by that. After all, it is open source software, not a closed system.
Open source has many advantages, but it is the user who suffers the most and it is easy to use. It would be interesting to see how many celebrities who come to Mastodon can navigate and understand. Wherever you go, I wish you good luck!
