Trying to cut through the buzz around beauty technology is a difficult task. The roller used to be the most high-tech skincare tool you could have in your arsenal, but now we have blue light, ultrasound, laser and LED devices to choose from. It's confusing, and given their high prices, you don't have the luxury of trying them out and hoping they work.
I've been lucky enough to experience them for myself during all my work, and I can safely say that they are all a little... not so good. I might be in them for about a week, but soon they'll be stuck in the back of my bathroom closet like an abandoned doll in Toy Story (but not as heartbreaking - let's be clear).
Any skin care professional will tell you that the products you use are really the right ones. Skin care doesn't work without consistency, including equipment. I figured that until I tried Foreo's LUNA 4 Cleanser, I just wasn't ready for the commitment that these skincare products require. I put together my own creative version of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, and there was no way I was going to give it up.
As a person with rosacea, I have always had a strict rule: nothing with hair should come near my face. If I ever saw a Clarisonic, I swear it burned my cheeks. But when I was introduced to Foreo's LUNA 4, with its version specifically designed for sensitive skin, I had a Carrie Bradshaw moment and couldn't help but wonder. “How are those silicone bristles? You are so nice."
I wouldn't say its softness rivals that of my cat, but for something designed to remove sweat and dirt, it was pretty impressive. Especially since silicone is super hygienic and easy to clean.
I've always been a chiffon girl (if that's the case). I liked that they could be worn with clothing, were cheap, and allowed for gentle exfoliation. On a whim, I decided to throw out the rags and test this Foreo device to prove it wasn't worth the high price. But the thing is, I couldn't.
Not only did I find no trace of foundation on my skin, but my face seemed to glow afterwards thanks to the gentle massage. The face was absolutely clean, no dryness. I was frustrated that it worked so well because I really wanted to prove that the cheapest option is always the best.
I didn't even forget to use it. Can you imagine it? You are actively looking for a skin care product instead of collecting dust at the bottom of the bathroom shelf. It was unheard of. Even in the post-commercial state, my drunken brain remembered how the machine picked me up and removed my makeup. This has never happened to me.
Not only did I notice less breakouts, but any texture issues I had seemed to be resolved. I've always had rougher skin around my chin, a "textured beard" if you will, but after just a week I noticed that it was completely softer. No retinol or chemical peel could do that.
Although she recommends using a device with a foaming cleanser, it doesn't work well with my skin. I've tried gel and cream textures and found that they work equally well, so don't buy another cleanser if you don't need it.
One of the biggest mistakes I've seen online with them is that you have to connect the device to the Foreo app via Bluetooth in order to set it up. I personally don't struggle with this, but I can imagine it's not ideal for technophobes. The good news is that once it's done, it's done and you can use it without opening the app. If you want to take advantage of this technology, you can sync your device and choose from different cleaning and massage modes.
As I mentioned earlier, this device is not cheap, but it has some nice features that justify the price. In addition to the soft bristles, the pillow also has 16 intensity levels and can be used as a massager to stimulate lymphatic drainage (the key to preventing toxin buildup). Although it can be used in the morning and evening, I prefer to use it during my second wash to make sure I remove all traces of makeup. Also, I've been using it since September and didn't even have to charge it.
While I still wouldn't call it cheap, if you're just looking for an effective clean, I'd suggest going with the more affordable LUNA mini 3. It doesn't have all the fancy massage settings, bells and whistles, but it does a great job of clearing dirt as well. Plus, it's smaller, making it a great travel companion. For girls with sensitive skin, the bristles on this version are not as soft as the LUNA 4 version, but if you don't mind brushing a little more, I'd say it provides the same effective cleaning.
In general, adding it to your skin care regimen is optional, we are not talking about SPF here. But when I accidentally forgot to put it in my toiletries bag, washing my face is a bit like brushing my teeth without toothpaste, not as fresh. All I can say is that if you have coins to spend it is a great investment. I miss them, I forget to pack, and I'm the type to go weeks without seeing my best friends for life; it says something.
