Huawei Watch Buds Review: I Couldnt Live With This Flipping Expensive Gadget

Do you need a pair of wireless headphones often, are they always with you when you need them most, or do you forget to take them? If so, the Huawei Watch Buds are for you, as this simple-looking smartwatch has true wireless earbuds hidden inside. Press a button, you fold the top of the watch and pop out a pair of small buds - the problems mentioned above will be over.

It seems a little funny, and no doubt. But I know I need headphones and I don't have them, so here's the use case. Unfortunately, it lacks a very useful feature that I can't live with at the moment, and I'm not sure what else I can get for the same price.

Huawei Watch Buds: Visual Design

Huawei knows how to make a good smartwatch. From the original Huawei Watch to the Watch GT3 (Porsche design or not), smartwatches have an aspirational style and are a great alternative to smaller and smaller models like the Pixel Watch. The design of the Huawei Watch Bud is close to current standards, but not quite. The stainless steel case is a good start, but the trappings are unattractive.

Huawei says the crown has a Claus-de-Paris coating (a laminated coating sometimes found on luxury watches), but it's so smooth you'll hardly notice it. The case is mounted on a simple leather strap and while the slight bezel is curved, it doesn't add much character to the watch. The screen has a steep 3D curve before it reaches the body and is made of lithium aluminum silicate, which feels plastic under your fingers while offering excellent scratch resistance. To make matters worse, it feels like plastic when you touch it and remove the headset and put it back in place.

Let's talk about how to unlock it, since this is the best part of the design. Press the button at the 6 o'clock position and the entire top of the watch opens - revealing two small tabs that magnetically attach to the bottom. It's very neat and there's something cool and fun about Watch Buds The headphones are held securely by magnets and can be easily removed and replaced. A truly wireless headphone case fits right on your wrist. However, the look and feel of this plastic watch feels a bit cheap, and that's not a good thing because it's not a cheap product .

How do you feel when you wear it? It's not too heavy at 77g, but it's 15mm thick - and the side panel design makes it feel huge. The leather strap sweats, but is very stretchy once worn, which some like.

When the watch is closed, it has a waterproof rating of IPX7, but it is generally dustproof and does not stop when the watch is opened. The headphones have a basic IPX4 waterproof rating, making them suitable for use in the rain and during sports.

While some smartwatches pretend to be good traditional watches, the Huawei Watch Buds are a bold piece of technology. While the headphones have a bit of sci-fi, there's no romance or connection to the product, and I think that's important for what we're wearing.

Huawei Watch Buds: Headphone Design

If you want to put a pair of earbuds on your smartwatch, they need to be small, and watch buds work well here. They are small, only 21 mm long and 10 mm wide, and weigh only 4 grams each. They don't have fancy designs or long handles. They are like little balls that you put in your ears. Although the bottom of the dial shows the L and R positions, watch buds don't necessarily have left or right earcups. They know which ear it is placed in and adjust the sound accordingly. Also, since the tips point downward, it doesn't matter how they are placed on the watch as long as they are very easy to work with.

Not sure about compatibility. Huawei provides three sizes of earphones but none of them fit my ears, they slowly start to loosen when I talk and move. At first I couldn't seal my ears properly, but I filled them in another way which solved the problem but created a new one. Wrapped like this, I heard myself breathing and thought it wasn't right. Which gets boring after a while. They are very small and therefore not visible. If anything, they look more like bulky hearing aids than actual tiny wireless headphones.

The control system is responsive but moderately competent and quite limited. There's a double-tap function that lets you play and pause the headphones, select the next or previous track, or activate the virtual assistant. There is no way to do all this with different gestures or changing the headset volume. A triple tap controls Active Noise Canceling (ANC) or ends a call.

You don't have to touch the earpiece as it detects the tap on your earlobe. Yes, sometimes they do. As with all click-based gestures, it doesn't always work, and it's common to repeatedly tap your ear when trying to pause and play. Tapping the headset is safer than touching your ear, but the motion control options are so limited that you'll find yourself on your phone a lot.

Huawei Watch Buds: Connect

Pairing Huawei Watch Buds with your phone can be a little tricky. As with new Huawei smartwatches, connecting to a Huawei phone is seamless and hassle-free. It's also incredibly easy if you have an iPhone. But if you have a non-Huawei Android phone, this can be a problem. This requires the Huawei Health app for Android, which is available from the Apple App Store but must be downloaded from the Huawei App Gallery or directly from the Huawei website.

To get the Health app on your phone on Android, you need to accept notifications about privacy and security risks, and the app can send notifications, track location, handle calls, and more. You need to spend some time to allow it.

Unfortunately, this process is not easy and when I connected it to the Xiaomi 13 Pro, the phone refused to receive notifications. This can change if you spend some time online to understand everything, but doing so is a boring and usually weak part of the onboarding experience.

Once the watch is connected and properly authorized, it will work fine and receive notifications I connected the watch to my iPhone 14 Pro and it works great. Connecting and syncing is very easy, and the sign-in instructions are even easier However, if the Apple Watch Series 8 is the best smartwatch, there is no way to buy Watch Buds for the iPhone.

Huawei Watch Buds: Sound Quality

The most important thing to note is that you can only connect Huawei Watch Buds to your phone while typing. There is no way to connect headphones to a computer, tablet or other device. Full connectivity with the phone is integrated with the smartwatch. A document provided to reviewers with the preview shoot said the feature would be enabled in a future software update, but no timeline was given.

It's a big deal. Like most people, I use headphones for various purposes throughout the day with multiple devices, and they lose a lot of value if they're only connected to my phone and not to my computer. It completely defeats the purpose of buying an "always with you" product if it only works with one device. Do I also need to bring a pair of headphones? No, I just bought regular headphones and should have remembered better.

Audio is provided by four magnetic planar drivers and the headphones support SBC, AAC and L2HD codecs. I like the sound but it's mostly in the default sound profile or the sounds in the health app. Bass boost settings are muddy and out of control which shows how bad they can be when the bass is heavy. They're good for casual listening, but don't expect "critical" listening - that's what you'd expect from a product like this. Ringtones and spoken words are great, and if you can handle the weird isolation, they can also work well for sleep.

Huawei Watch Buds feature ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and are not ideal for general use on the go. But it's easily overshadowed by Apple's AirPods Pro 2, and when we're near heavy traffic, the watch buds don't quite filter the volume, forcing me to adjust the volume to compensate. Overall, once you get used to their size and accept that they only work with your phone, the Huawei Watch Buds are solid earbuds for everyday use and very convenient to have with you all the time.

Huawei Watch Buds: Smartwatch Features

Headphones are just part of the package. The Huawei Watch Buds smartwatch has a 1.43-inch screen and a Huawei TrueSense 5.0+ sensor on the back to monitor your heart rate and blood oxygen levels. All data is stored and displayed in the Huawei Health app. The HarmonyOS operating system is the same as the Watch GT3 Pro and I've detailed how to use it in this review.

There are many points to discuss separately. The aptly named Healthy Living Shamrock evolved from the Health Shamrock and works similarly, filling every leaf in your daily endeavors. The problem is that it requires some manual effort, like stuffing those sheets, adding up how much water you drink, and (surprisingly) a daily smile that requires photo verification. Add sleep to the mix, but I found the Huawei Watch Buds to be uncomfortable to wear overnight – the size, design and fit combine.

This means you never fill out all the sheets and it kills motivation. Apple's Ring system is automated and more motivating because it's clear what you need to do to achieve your goals Health Clover is very complex. You can see your steps and activity on the watch face, but other information such as a simple alarm system. It's a tile that you access by swiping left or right on the screen, and it integrates with the call list, music controls, heart rate, and weather details. A maximum of six tiles are available.

Training Mode tracks 80 different workouts, but there are no shortcuts to individual apps or gadgets. It disables the always-on screen and locks the screen while it's running, and auto-detection is off by default. The workout screens are informative but the design isn't particularly attractive, and starting and stopping workouts is a bit of a chore, especially compared to the Apple Watch.
