The StarTech 15.6-inch Laptop Backpack with Detachable Accessory Bag (NTBKBAG156) looks a lot like other backpacks. It is black in color and made of ballistic nylon. The zipper is firmly sewn. The zippers are made of stainless steel and have a yellow dot on each end. Overall, this backpack feels solid and sturdy, showing no obvious signs of wear after several months of daily use.
The backpack itself is 12 3/4 inches wide, only 16 3/4 inches tall, and about 8 inches deep. The back of the pack has good back cushioning, most of which is covered in breathable mesh. The center back of the backpack has a thin, flat strap that you can use to slip the handle of a rolling suitcase on the go. Tires have some effect, but not significant. Again, the part that rests against your body is also lined with mesh for breathability, while the rest is the same nylon as the rest of the pack. There is a small zippered pocket on the right side of the belt.
There are also lots of compartments and pockets. The front zippered pocket opens and has a vertical zippered mesh pocket, as well as two three-piece elastic cords for cables or other items. Above is a smaller velvet-lined pocket that barely fits a mid-range smartphone. A rubberized StarTech.com badge is sewn onto the front of this small bag.
As for the main compartment, the zipper starts and ends in the middle of each side of the backpack. The main compartment is quite large and has a sleeve pocket at the back, a mesh pocket at the back and a small zipped compartment at the front with a small clip. The bottom of the main compartment leaves room for a bag underneath in line with the middle of the pack. The bottom can be removed from the sides and front and adjusted to create more space, but this requires removing the pockets.
Once the main compartment is closed, a large handle sits at the top of the pack. It is quite thick and has a rubberized top for added durability. Behind the armrest is a 15.6-inch laptop compartment. Here, the zipper runs underneath both sides of the bag, providing ample access. There is a laptop sleeve at the back of the backpack, a zippered pocket at the front of the compartment, and finally more space between the two for other items. However, with a laptop in here and a tablet or something in the zip pocket, there probably isn't much room for anything else.
There is a water bottle pocket on the left side and a small zippered access panel on the lower right side of the backpack for travel accessories. The bag has a handle on one side that you can use to pull it out from under the backpack. It's solid and it would be nice if the access panel was a little bigger. The accessory case itself measures 10 1/2 inches long, 5 1/4 inches wide, and about 3 inches tall. The zipper runs along the top edge. When opened, there is a main pocket with several small dividers and cables etc. there is a bungee net for While it offers a good amount of space, there aren't many ways to organize it, and most accessories will be tucked inside rather than neatly organized.
Overall, the StarTech 15.6-inch Laptop Backpack is pretty solid, but some of the pockets are quite small and the included organizers leave a little to be desired for keeping computer accessories tidy. While this is sufficient, the interior of the straps could also use a bit more padding for comfort if you wear the strap for longer periods of time.
Protection
The StarTech 15.6-inch Laptop Backpack provides perfect protection for your laptop as the laptop sleeve rests directly on your back. On the one hand, it is stuffed here, and on the other hand, there is enough space with the main compartment to protect your laptop. This bag doesn't have waterproofing or even a closed zipper, so if you get caught in the rain, you'll need to cover the backpack to keep the moisture out of the bag.

At an MSRP of $163.99, the StarTech 15.6-inch Laptop Backpack with Detachable Accessory Book Stand is a bit more expensive. Despite its decent build, spacious accessory organizer box, and travel/airline compatibility, there are better options in this price range.
