As a teenager, my makeup routine consisted of a bottle of UltraGlow bronzer and Miss Selfridge lip gloss. Skincare-wise, Christy's Cucumber Face Mask (free with Just 17 Magazine) and Mom's Wardrobe Moisturizer did the trick.
How things have changed. My 15 year old daughter knows more about skin care and makeup than I do. And it started from a young age. i remember her asking for a foundation brush for being over 11 years old. And I overheard her and her friends discussing serums and masks at bedtime like we were talking about ponies. They are so good at contouring and highlighting that many of them have made fake makeup tutorial videos.
A few years ago, my daughter's makeup skills really improved. Show up to breakfast looking fresh and dewy to the question, "Are you wearing makeup or not?" just the way most of us want it to appear. You look without makeup.
It all depends on TikTok, Instagram and Youtube. They spawned a generation of skincare and makeup gurus who distinguished hyaluronic acid from azelaic acid, and that foundation and highlighter are just as important in the makeup bag as they are in the art department.
Most of her knowledge comes from celebrity and makeup artist guides who do step-by-step 'skincare' or 'date makeup' in Vogue Beauty Secrets,” my daughter Allegra told me. Jennifer Lopez and Kate Moss Talk Bags Makeup and Bath. cabinets them.
Of course, the TikTok tutorial is also a huge success. Singer Madison Beer's videos of her applying blush and highlighter have garnered more than 18.5 million views.
If someone had told me I'd be chained to makeup artist Hailey Bieber by sharing her sketchy "makeup" on TikTok (the hashtag maryphilipsmakeup has 9.6 million views as of this writing), I sure as hell wouldn't have believed it. :
Allegra's New Year's wish list included concealer, highlighter, brow wax and some Charlotte Tilbury blush (sold out), proving she wears a lot of makeup. I wonder how all of this is used to get that light end result and if any of these tips will work for me at 51.
So during a break from revising her mock GCSEs, I gave my daughter carte blanche on her trick using the most useful TikTok tips she thought would work for me. I held back on bleaching my eyebrows and using red lipstick as eyeshadow so I wouldn't look like The Da Vinci Code's Silas, asking him to look more like J.Lo.
Allegra suggests watching a few TikTok videos together so I can see exactly how I can make my own. She warned me not to be ashamed of the overly full lips and long nails that many makeup artists sport, but to just focus on my makeup skills.
Once I got used to it (and the finger tattoos too) it was addictive and I found myself sending textbook sketches to my girlfriends saying, "You have to try this."
I also learned that "no makeup" requires a LOT of makeup. A week later I'm working out every morning and I honestly don't think I've ever felt better. My minor son even congratulated me the next morning. The bad thing is that I have to wake up half an hour early to apply everything.
Six makeup tips I learned as a teenager
Contouring and applying concealer before foundation
Make-up artist Mary Phillips (Hailey Bieber, Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek) shares this tip. Applying contouring products before applying foundation seems strange, but it seems to make it look more natural.
Westman Atelier Face Trace Contour Stick (£44, www.cultbeauty.com ) works great as it's not too dark and blends well. It begins with a contour line drawn from the bottom of the cheekbones to the top of the ears; then take the outline from the browbone to the hairline and follow the hairline. Finally, draw a contour line below the jawline to make the jawline more defined. Then smooth it all out with a brush.
Then came the concealer, which I've never used because it always looks powdery. I like makeup artist Bobbi Brown's tip to apply moisturizer before concealer. Work!
Terry's Hyaluronic Eye Serum (£43, spacenk.com) and Jones Road Concealer Pencils (£24, Libertylondon.com) work really well and don't feel sticky at all. Ilia's True Skin Serum Concealer (22 lbs., net-a-porter.com) is also good.

Do not apply foundation all over your face.
This was the hardest part for me because I'm used to slathering tinted moisturizers all over the place, but makeup artist Gucci Westman's videos put the foundation only where you want it to look good, right around the nose, chin, or whatever. : . pigmentation. or blush.
“Choose products that are moist, not matte; you look fresher and you look younger,” says Westman. Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion Drops (£62, selfridges.com) are fantastic. My skin has never looked so good.
Always use blush
I've never been into blush, but singer Madison Beer's blush video is so cute I couldn't wait to try it. Use a cream blush (never powder) and apply it higher on the face than you think (almost above the cheekbones). Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid in Hope (£22, spacenk.com) is my new go-to.
Choose a highlighter that matches your skin tone
"Find a shade that makes it look like the light is coming from under the skin, rather than sitting on top of it," says beauty blogger Megan Lavallee. A three-point highlighter trick is to apply it on the cheekbones, one on the inner corner of the eye and one on the browbones to make her look more alert. The Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand (£30, johnlewis.com) works well.

Apply eyeliner only to the outer corners of the eyes
Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia Gerber says: "Use eyeliner only on the outer corners of the eyes as it opens up the eyes and makes them look more attractive."
Then apply natural mascara. Lengthening mascara looks more beautiful than thick mascara, which will visually reduce the eyes. Victoria Beckham Kajal Satin Eyeliner (£26, victoriabeckham.com) and Maybelline Great Lash Mascara (£6.99, lookfantastic.com) work well.
Never use a matte lipstick
Hailey Bieber says: "If you want your lips to look fuller, always go for a glossy look." Matte lipsticks do not look good on anyone and dry out the lips.
If your favorite lipstick has a satin shade, pair it with sheer lip gloss to plump up your lips. I prefer Victoria Beckham Posh Gloss (not sticky at all) (£28, victoriabeckhambeauty) in Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet intemporelle (£35, johnlewis.com).
